8 Easy Winter Exercises for Uni Students

If you find yourself more sedentary during the winter months, exercise can help you beat the winter blues and boost your energy levels.

While it can be tough to motivate yourself to exercise in colder weather, there are a few simple, indoor winter workouts for university students which will help you stay healthy and in shape, while on a budget.

1. Jump Rope

Jumping rope is not only fun, but highly beneficial to your health too. It’s essentially a low-impact plyometric workout that fries the muscles neglected by regular calf raises, and while this won’t matter much for the next few months, you’ll be glad you did this winter workout when, mercifully, shorts season returns. You can even do it all from the comfort of your student apartment! Just a ten minute session a day can help boost your well-being.

2. Stair Stepping

Stair stepping is a great form of exercise to do in your apartment. Find the largest book you own (or a sturdy chair), place it in front of the TV, and step up and down while watching your favourite show. You won’t break a sweat as you would with a jump rope, but you will keep your body active and healthy.

3. The Plank

If you don’t have much time for a winter workout but want to strengthen your core muscles, this is your go-to workout. Put yourself in a push-up position, but instead of bending your arms and moving down to the floor, keep your arms extended. Begin by holding the position for 30 seconds, then add 10 seconds every day. You can also vary the plank to keep it interesting.

See how long you can last – it’s not going to be easy! This is one of the most challenging exercises, but also one of the best winter workouts for your core.

4. Dancing

Dancing is a total-body workout that is also enjoyable. It’s good for your heart, strengthens you, and can help with balance and coordination.

It’s a great way to burn calories and raise your heart rate while having fun, and the best part is there is no need to look like a pro or impress anyone when you’re in the privacy of your student apartment. Should you have those moves waxed, step it up and spend the night dancing away with friends.

5. Lunges

Doing lunges down your student hallway is a great way to get your winter workout in. If that becomes too easy, you can hold weights in each hand to add resistance to the movement. Feel free to add a squat at the end, to feel those glutes burning!

6. Cleaning

Yea we know…. Cleaning, really? It’s an errand that we all need to do and can actually be very physical, especially vacuuming and mopping. If you’re stuck inside this winter, set up a cleaning schedule and clean your living area instead of lazing on the couch. You might as well kill two birds with one stone! In fact three, as living in a clean space will free up that clutter in your mind.

7. Water Bottle Weights

Make your own weights by filling up water bottles fore arm, shoulder, and back strength training.

If using water bottles becomes too simple, try using milk jugs instead. By filling the jugs to the exact weight you require, you can tailor the exercise to your level. Try increasing the amount of water each time you workout for a greater challenge.

8. YouTube Workout

Our personal favourite… On YouTube, you can find tons of workout routines. If you want to do a traditional workout that includes push-ups, squats, and crunches but are unsure how to do them correctly, YouTube is your go-to. There are a wide variety of exercise videos available that teach you how to exercise correctly and enjoy your winter workout, while following the routine at hand.

With winter here, finding the motivation for your winter workout can be challenging; however, keeping fit during this cold season is vital for your mental and physical health.
